When beginning the college search process, it can be hard to know where to start. Students and families often default to household-name elite colleges or the ones they see in published rankings. But with thousands of colleges and universities in the U.S. alone, many excellent options with strong opportunities and outcomes get overlooked. Below are four hidden gem colleges to consider for your college research.
Kalamazoo College: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Through its reputable K-Plan, Kalamazoo College enables students to pursue an interdisciplinary course of study completely tailored to their own interests, while receiving close faculty mentorship. The K-Plan often builds in study abroad, and most students participate. By graduation, all students complete a Senior Integrated Project — an in-depth capstone experience built on a student’s original work or research.
Kalamazoo College awards every admitted student a merit scholarship based on their academic achievements, often ranging between $44,000-$52,000 annually, while 98% of students also receive some form of financial aid. K College is a top producer of Fulbright recipients, and its graduates earn doctorate degrees at rates much higher than the national average among all U.S. colleges and universities.
The College also places a strong focus on experiential education, with students often integrating their academic studies with community engagement through the Mary Jane Underwood Stryker Center for Civic Engagement and the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership.
Rhodes College: Memphis, Tennessee
With its Collegiate Gothic architecture, historic oak trees, and Class IV Arboretum designation, Rhodes College offers a visually striking campus in the heart of Memphis’ historic Midtown neighborhood. As one of the few liberal arts colleges in a major city, Rhodes gives students access to internships and experiential learning opportunities at organizations such as St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Memphis Zoo, and several Fortune 500 companies. Approximately 80% of students participate in community service, and the Rhodes Promise guarantees every student at least one high-impact learning experience through independent research, an internship or fellowship, or study abroad.
The college’s close-knit community is also shaped by its century-old Honor System, which asks students to uphold a shared commitment to honesty, loyalty, and service. At the same time, Rhodes’ rigorous academics prepare students well for life after graduation.
Among class of 2024 students applying to graduate or professional schools, 80% of those accepted reported being admitted to their first-choice program, while Rhodes students applying to medical and law schools have historically posted acceptance rates well above the national average.
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology: Terre Haute, Indiana
With a student population of more than 2,100 undergraduates and approximately 70 graduate students, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology keeps its focus almost entirely on undergraduates, and that shows up in how students spend their time: building, testing, and researching in high-tech labs rather than sitting through lectures.
The Micro-Nano Device and Systems (MiNDS) Cleanroom gives students access to nanotechnology and semiconductor design tools most undergraduates never touch. The Branam and Kremer Innovation Centers give tinkerers and inventors dedicated space to build. And Rose-Hulman Ventures, the school’s consulting firm and incubator, lets students take on real client work before they’ve even graduated.
Nationally recognized for its career placement outcomes and return on investment, Rose-Hulman offers the Rose Squared program, which allows qualified students to earn a Bachelor of Science and master’s degree in four years at no additional cost. Additionally, Rose-Hulman students enjoy competitive salaries and top industry employment offers upon graduation. For the class of 2025, six of the institution’s engineering majors reported average starting salaries above $100,000, among the highest in the country for STEM graduates.
Union College: Schenectady, New York
Since its founding in 1795, Union College has produced 13 governors, 90 college presidents, Nobel laureates, and a U.S. president, to name a few. Interdisciplinary learning is the norm at Union, with 75% of students pursuing double majors or other combinations of majors and minors. Union is one of the very few liberal arts colleges in the U.S. to offer fully ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering degrees in biomedical engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering.
For students interested in pursuing advanced degrees in law, business, and medicine, Union boasts several accelerated combined-degree pathways, namely the 3+3 Accelerated Law Program with Albany Law School, the 4+1 Business Master’s Pathway with the University of Rochester, and the 8-Year Leadership in Medicine – Health Management Program in partnership with Clarkson University and Albany Medical College.
Union College assigns students to one of seven residences in the Minerva House system, where they benefit from academically and socially enriching opportunities, as well as a tight-knit home away from home throughout their time in college.
