Richard specializes in preparation for the SAT, SAT Subject Tests in French, World History, US History, and Literature, AP US History, AP World History, AP European History, AP Government, AP English Literature, AP English Composition, and AP French.

Richard has more than a decade of tutoring and test prep experience, specializing in SAT prep as well as English and literature tutoring. Before joining IvyWise, Richard spent more than 12 years working in a variety of roles in teaching, education program management, and university counseling. Richard is currently an English teacher who also loves history, learning about a broad range of subjects, and Global Health innovations such as the work of Dr. Paul Farmer and Partners in Health.

From 2011 to early 2017, Richard served as the Academic Dean of Bridge2Rwanda Scholars, a leading preparation and scholarship program for outstanding African students based in Rwanda. Through this program, which he co-founded, Richard’s students have accepted more than $40 million in college scholarships. He currently has students attending all of the Ivy League universities, Stanford, MIT, the University of Chicago, and Vanderbilt, among other world-leading universities.

He has taught at institutions including the University of California-Davis and the National University of Rwanda, and continues to teach from a love of learning and helping students to unlock their full potential and realize their dreams over time.

As a teacher and tutor, Richard emphasizes dialogue with each student, to ensure that what they are studying is both of interest and the best possible material for the kind of progress that the student wants to make.

Richard is originally from Chicago and he is delighted to be back home while at the same time tutoring and teaching students all over the world how to practice and develop a growth mindset (which he considers to be the secret to his students’ success!) In his free time Richard enjoys playing his favorite sport, squash, exploring Chicago, and spending time with family and friends.
