Holiday Gift Guide 2011

It’s December, and the holidays bring a welcome break for students who have been working hard since the start of the academic year. The holidays can also be a great time to celebrate all that your student has accomplished, as well as the bright future ahead. With this in mind, we’ve created a list of gift ideas to please the future (or current) college students on your list.

Magazine Subscription
College and high-school students love getting mail! Give your student a weekly or monthly treat, and a break from required reading, with a magazine subscription. Consider The Economist for the business-minded student, Discover for the science lover, The Food Network Magazine to inspire some quick meal ideas, or Entertainment Weekly just for fun. Digital subscriptions are also available for many popular magazines, so if e-reading is more your student’s style, you can have the latest issues automatically delivered to their iPad, Kindle, or Nook.

Livescribe Echo Smart Pen
Note-taking isn’t what it used to be! With up to 8GB of memory, the Livescribe Echo Smartpen holds hundreds of hours of recorded audio and lets your student link recordings to his or her handwritten notes. This unassuming device will help your student ensure he or she never misses a teacher’s key point and it also lets your student save and send notes to a computer. Students interested in math and science will love apps such as Quick Calc, which gives answers to written addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division problems. As an added bonus, through January 21, 2012, Livescribe is including a free one-year subscription to Evernote Premium with every pen purchase.

The Sanctuary Charging Station
Space is a hot commodity when it comes to dorm life, so compact and compatible are welcome words. The Sanctuary Charging Station from BlueLounge is exactly that. The 9” square box is compatible with more than 3,700, devices including the Blackberry and the iPhone, and lets users charge up to 12 devices at once. The sleek design not only looks cool, but also provides a convenient spot to keep keys, headphones, a wallet, and other necessities, all in one place.

Jawbone Jambox
Another great space-saving option, the Jawbone Jambox, doesn’t sacrifice quality for size! At only 5.95 x 2.25 x 1.6 inches, weighing only 12 ounces, and boasting a ten-hour battery life, this portable speaker system works great in your student’s room and out on the quad. The speaker connects to mobile phones, computers, tablets, MP3 players, and Bluetooth-enabled devices. Best of all, it’s wireless, so it can easily go from home to hangout and keep up with your student’s busy lifestyle.

Singing Machine Multi-Function Karaoke System with iPod Docking
Dr. Kat often says that the college admissions process is a lot like American Idol. Help your student take center stage with the dorm-friendly Singing Machine Multi-Function Karaoke System. The iPod docking station lets your student plug into their own music library so there’s never a shortage of hits to rock out to. This multi-tasking machine also features a CD player, a radio, an alarm clock, and comes with a remote control and microphone.

Adidas Running miCoach Pacer Bundle
Help your student maintain a healthy lifestyle (and stave off the “Freshman 15″) with the Adidas Running miCoach Pacer. This compact device for running provides audible coaching to keep your student moving and features a pacer, stride sensor, and heart rate monitor to track distance, heart rate, and calories burned. The associated website, micoach.com helps your student set goals, create training plans, track progress, and receive professional feedback. Plus, your student doesn’t have to sacrifice their workout tunes; the MiCoach device is compatible with most digital media players, so your student can listen to music and coaching advice simultaneously.

Whether you are celebrating a student’s early acceptance, welcoming your student home, or just enjoying a break from the school year routine, December is a time to celebrate for many. Hopefully, we’ve given you a few great ideas on how to surprise and delight the student in your life. Happy holidays to you and yours from all of us at IvyWise!
