IvyWise Master Tutor
B.A., Harvard University
Katie specializes in preparation for SAT Subject Tests in French and Literature and academic support in French, English language, literature, and paper editing.
Katie has five years of experience in tutoring and academic prep specializing in foreign language and humanities, including French, English, and literature.
Katie completed her BA in English with a focus on creative writing at Harvard University. In addition to being a teaching assistant for undergraduates at Harvard, she also works for a group at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health helping to train aid workers responding to disaster and conflict in the field.
Katie was raised bilingual and grew up in Schoharie, New York, a small town of about 3,000 people near Cooperstown. One of her favorite language fun facts is that Schoharie was originally settled by the Dutch and still uses some colonial Dutch slang heard nowhere else – mostly to call out neighbors for being messy!
Katie believes that language skills help people create lasting friendships and an understanding between cultures. As a tutor, Katie understands the difficulties students encounter when they learn another language, mostly from firsthand experience with French grammar and studying Arabic in college. In her opinion, building confidence and mastery is achieved by having fun, finding the combination of tools that work for the student’s learning style, understanding quirks in the language influenced by history and culture, and spending time together working hard on the material.
While not tutoring or working at Harvard, Katie can be found skiing or hiking, rearranging furniture, or curled up with a good book.
