The Truth About Getting In
by Katherine Cohen, Ph.D.

The inside story on applying early and increasing your chances of early acceptance

  • The most common essay and interview mistakes
  • Why some colleges are better for you than the Ivy League
  • The question you must ask before you choose a college

Did you know that:

  • Some glowing letters of recommendation can hurt your chances of admission
  • Working your way through high school can be more appealing to an admissions officer than a long list of extracurricular activities

The right strategy for negotiating the college admissions process makes the difference between acceptance and rejection, regardless of your grades

The truths and myths about getting into the top schools from a private college counselor who has placed 75% of her clients in the Ivy League, as well as the most competitive colleges in the country.

If you're getting ready for the college admissions process, you need this book. It used to be that a college applicant with a great SAT score and high grade-point average was easily accepted into a first-choice college. Not anymore. These days it takes an outstanding application, too. The extracurricular activities or "brag" sheet, the personal essay, and the interview all weigh heavily in the acceptance process.

As a private college admissions counselor, Dr. Katherine Cohen has placed a great majority of her clients in their first-choice colleges. Now, for the first time, Dr. Cohen offers her successful program in a book complete with work-sheets, timeliness and checklists to help students demystify the college admissions process and get into that dream college.

Divided into chapters that cover everything from what courses to take in high school to how to ace that all-important interview, this book is the college admissions bible for students and parents.

Dear IvyWise (especially Katherine Cohen),

I wasn't sure who to contact, but I wanted to thank you for your excellent book, The Truth About Getting In. For the past three years I've used your book like a bible for the college admissions process. Your book allowed me to be very independent during the whole process (Being a teen, I like to do things myself-I didn't want my parents to have too much input in the process) and still create a wonderful application. It also helped me communicate better with my college counselor and voice my academic goals. I'm the first child ever in my family to be looking at such prestigious schools-but I didn't feel lost with your book.

I initially got deferred from Yale, but I kept following all your advice and this past week I received acceptances from Yale, Brown, Dartmouth, Duke and even more wonderful schools. Yale is my absolute dream school and I just wanted to thank you for creating a book that helped me succeed.

Sincerely,

Katie Planey

This note is to inform you that your book The Truth About Getting In helped my son get into an Ivy League School. He applied in his senior year to Ivy schools but received rejections. We were unaware that tremendous preparation needed to be in place before sending any material to schools. He accepted admission to another school, but was very unhappy about it. He realized that he desperately wanted to be at an Ivy school but needed to present himself accordingly.

By Christmas he had decided to apply to schools where he did not apply before. We used your book extensively, especially setting up his resume. What a wealth of information! Things that we overlooked before were presented this time in good format. Needless to say he was put on the waiting list for one (it did not accept any transfer students this year) and was accepted to another. He now attends The University of Pennsylvania and is loving it. What a great school and a great match for him! Thank you so very much for your book. I am sure that he will look forward to working with you in the future for graduate school.
