Fashion With A Past - Katherine Cohen
Dressed in vintage Chanel cashmere to teach Spanish and Latin American literature to undergrads, Kat Cohen definitely stood out in the jeans-and-sweatshirt crowd while a Ph.D. student at Yale. Cohen has since moved to New York and set up a college-counseling service, IvyWise (877-489-9473). During her teenage years in Los Angeles, she'd get up at dawn on Sunday mornings to scour the Rose Bowl Flea Market for Hermés scarfs, Gucci bags, antique cuff links and anything Asia-inspired. Cohen still gravitates toward Asian pieces, but has become considerably more selective about workmanship and condition, and she'll spend up to $300 to dry-clean a single item. In addition to a number of beautifully embroidered Chinese silk jackets, her prize possessions include a turn-of-the-century Japanese robe that she wore in May to a wedding at Sudeley Castle in England and a luxuriantly fringed 1930s Art Deco shawl. Cohen says that, on a spiritual level, wearing vintage gives her a mysterious connection to distant places and bygone eras. Then there's her practical side. Petite by contemporary standards, she has a much easier time finding her size in vintage.
