Telling Tales: Counselor with the keys to the Ivy League
By Hilary RosenbergFeb 14-20, 2000
Meet Katherine Cohen, college counselor.
Through her work counseling students on college admissions, Katherine Cohen helps her clients aim high, just as she is doing with her own business, Manhattan-based IvyWise.
Started in 1998, the company charges anywhere from $400 an hour for courses such as essay writing up to several thousand dollars for its full package of courses. those lofty rates along with an impressive record of achieving results, enabled IvyWise to rake in about $250,000 in sales last year.
Ms. Cohen, who hopes not just to take on more clients but also to introduce both an on-line admissions training program and counseling service for children in kindergarten through high school, is aiming to more than double revenues this year to at least $600,000. To do that, she recently brought on two new counselors.
An alumna of Brown University and Yale Graduate School, 32 year-old Ms. Cohen saw a market in helping high school students navigate the college admissions process at top-rung universities. Her competitive edge: the time she spent as an application reader and evaluator for Yale's Office of Admissions.
The IvyWise package includes everything from the essay-writing advice to assistance in finding community service work - a virtual requirement for getting into a top school nowadays Ms. Cohen advises.
She hopes to soon launch IvyWise Online, offering an interactive counseling service for those who don't want or can't afford one-on-one attention.
Helping students worldwide for more than 13 years, IvyWise offers comprehensive one-on-one educational counseling from a team of professionals who have read and evaluated applications at Ivy League and other selective schools.
